Man Severely Injured after Falling on Iron Bars

By Iceland Review

A man in his thirties fell four meters from the balcony of a summer house in Hrunamannahreppur municipality in south Iceland on Saturday night onto a foundation for an adjacent building and was pierced by seven iron bars. He is in critical condition.

A Coast Guard helicopter transported the injured man to hospital. The photo is unrelated to the story. By Páll Stefánsson.

Police and emergency services were called to the scene to cut the man loose. The iron bars had to be sawed so that the man could be transported to hospital. It was not considered safe to remove the bars from his body on site, Morgunbladid reports.

The man was conscious at first, but his condition worsened while he was being sawed loose. He was taken to Landspítali national hospital in Reykjavík with a Coast Guard helicopter.

At the hospital, the man underwent immediate surgery, which finished yesterday afternoon. He is now being kept unconscious on a ventilator.
