The Reykjavík District Court sentenced 28-year-old Ingvar Dór Birgisson to three and a half years in prison for the rape of a 14-year-old girl at his home in downtown Reykjavík in April 2010. The man was also ordered to pay ISK 900,000 in damages (USD 7,400, EUR 5,670).
The case was held up as the man fled to the Cayman Islands. A warrant was issued for his arrest and at one point having him extradited to Iceland was considered, mbl.is reports.
In coming to its conclusion, the court stated that there were no extenuating circumstances and that the man had violated a very young girl at a sensitive time in her development.
