Reykjavík District Court sentenced a man in his mid-thirties to six years in prison yesterday for serious and repeated sexual violations against his stepdaughter. This is one of the longest sentences for child abuse perpetrators have been given in Iceland.
The violations took place in January and February at which time the victim was 11. Her stepfather repeatedly had both vaginal and anal intercourse with her and also forced her to have oral sex with him on some occasions, Fréttabladid reports.
The man was arrested after friends of the mother took the girl from their home during a period of domestic disturbance. When police arrived to the scene, the man confessed to having kissed the girl repeatedly on her mouth.
The man later confessed to all charges and claimed to have been abused by his stepfather as a child. The girl, who is of a foreign origin, has difficulties expressing herself in relation to the case. She said she is ashamed for the violence that she has suffered. Her psychologist said it is uncertain whether she will ever recover.
Reykjavík District Court also ruled that the man has to pay his stepdaughter ISK 2.5 million (USD 31,000, EUR 21,000) in compensation, which is the highest amount of compensation perpetrators have had to pay in cases like this.
