Guðmundur Ingi Þóroddsson was yesterday sentenced to 12 years in prison in Denmark for large scale drug smuggling. Guðmundur acted as the ringleader in several attempted cases of amphetamine smuggling in Denmark.
A total of 18 people were investigated by Danish police authorities, who intercepted the smuggling of 66 kilos of amphetamine, visir.is reports.
Guðmundur confessed his role in the smuggling operation. Seven other Icelanders were among the group of ten accused. Their hearings will be held in August.
Guðmundur was sentenced to seven years in prison in Iceland for drug smuggling in 2000 and in 2002 he was sentenced to five years for drug smuggling which he planned from prison.
According to Karl Steinar Valsson, head of the narcotics division of the Icelandic police, the case is one of the largest the Icelandic police has worked on.
