Man Sent to Prison for Raping Ex-Wife

The Supreme Court of Iceland has confirmed a two-and-a-half year prison sentence over a 47-year-old man convicted in the West Fjords District Court for raping his ex-wife in February 2009. He is also to pay her ISK 1 million (USD 9,200, EUR 6,400) in compensation.

The man was found guilty of having driven with the woman to a remote place against her will, taken advantage of his physical superiority in strength and raping her, Morgunbladid reports.

The man maintained his innocence throughout the trial, claiming that the sexual intercourse was with his ex-wife’s consent, that she had agreed to “a quicky”.

Both the District Court and Supreme Court found it unlikely that the woman had willingly had sex with her ex-husband in a car in a remote area after having discussed matters concerning their divorce.

She had recently left her husband and begun a relationship with a new man.

The ruling stated that the women’s testimony had been detailed and clear and it was supported by a medical examination which took place at the Landspítali hospital’s emergency room in the night after the incident.
