Man Injured in Explosion in North Iceland

A man in his sixties was seriously injured in an explosion in a private house in Siglulfjördur in north Iceland yesterday. He was taken by ambulance to hospital in Akureyri and shortly afterwards by airplane to Reykjavík. He is being kept on a ventilator in the ICU of Landspítali, the national hospital.

The explosion occurred in a laundry room or storage facility in the lower floor of a two-story wooden house shortly after 6 pm, Morgunbladid and visir.is report.

The explosion was so powerful that it blew a door off its hinges and blasted out two windows. The man was inside the room where the explosion occurred. According to the police, he was covered in soot, had a number of scratches and couldn’t hear anything.

The cause of the explosion is unknown. Employees of the investigative department of the Akureyri police came to Siglufjördur today to investigate this case.
