An avalanche fell in the slope above the road Urðarvegur in Ísafjörður, the West Fjords, yesterday afternoon. Two men were caught by the avalanche, one of whom ended up with a fractured arm. The other man escaped unharmed.
According to the local police, the men had been walking up the slope carrying skis and had planned to ski back down, ruv.is reports.
ICE-SAR search and rescue volunteers from Ísafjörður and Hnífsdalur were called out along with paramedics.
No houses were at risk of being hit by the avalanche, the police said.
Search and rescue volunteers in the capital region were called out because of an injured hiker near the top of mountain Esja yesterday, as well as the mountaineering squad of the Reykjavík Metropolitan Fire Department and a Coast Guard helicopter.
The man was reported to have fractured both his legs, ruv.is reports.
