Man in Hospital after Police Chase

A man was admitted to intensive care after he drove his jeep into the pillar of an overpass on the intersection of Breidholtsbraut and Reykjanesbraut in Reykjavík on Tuseday evening while trying to escape from police who were chasing him.

According to physicians, the man’s condition is stable, Morgunbladid reports.

The Capital Region Police began chasing the jeep after they were notified by the Sudurnes Police department that the driver had hit a parked vehicle and seemed emotionally upset. Police feared for the safety of other commuters.

The police chase began south of Hafnarfjördur where police signaled to the driver that he should stop. He ignored the signals and at one point six police cars were chasing the jeep.

According to police, the man was not speeding, but he drove into the police cars that were chasing him at least three times. He finally lost control of the vehicle and hit the pillar.

The collision was harsh and the jeep is severely damaged. Cutters had to be used to remove the man from the wreckage and take him to the emergency room. Police had to close Reykjanesbraut temporarily because of the accident.
