Man Found Guilty for Attacking Teen in Park

Reykjavík District Court sentenced Ódinn Freyr Valdimarsson, who is 23, to three years in prison yesterday for having attacked a 16-year-old girl in Laugardalur park in Reykjavík in October. He is also to pay the victim ISK 1 million (USD 8,600, EUR 6,200) in damages.

Valdimarsson was found guilty of having attacked the girl who was walking along a path in the park. He repeatedly beat her with a hard object in the head and then grabbed her by the neck, tightening his grip until she lost consciousness, Morgunbladid reports.

The perpetrator was arrested one month afterwards. He confessed to the assault but later withdrew his confession. However, the majority of judges didn’t doubt his guilt.

One judge handed in special comments, reasoning the man should be found innocent since it was not at all certain that the original confession obtained during questioning by the police had been accurate.
