A man in his early thirties who went hiking in Mt. Helgafell by Hafnarfjörður outside Reykjavík yesterday morning was reported missing when he didn’t return in the afternoon. He was found seriously injured and taken to hospital where he passed away last night.
A Coast Guard helicopter crew found the hiker around 4 pm yesterday, shortly after they were called out, in a slope of the mountain. According to the Reykjavík Metropolitan Police, the man seemed to have fallen, Morgunblaðið reports.
A Coast Guard crew member and a physician were lowered down to the injured hiker and tended to him while the helicopter was refueled in Reykjavík.
Then he was taken by helicopter to the Landspítali nation hospital and treated at the ICU but his injuries proved too serious. The man’s death was announced on visir.is today at noon but his name has not been revealed.
