Man Drives Off Cliff in South Iceland

A man in his 60s was killed in a car accident on Sudurlandsvegur highway in south Iceland on Sunday. He drove his pickup off a 50-meter-high cliff and the vehicle didn’t come to a stop for 170 meters. The driver was alone in the car.

The man, who doesn’t appear to have been wearing a seatbelt, was thrown out of the car. When emergency services arrived to the scene they tried to resuscitate the man, but were unsuccessful, Morgunbladid reports.

At the scene, police required the assistance of an engineer specialized in calculating the speed the vehicle was driving before the accident, as well as from representatives of the Icelandic Federation for Motor Trades and Repairs and the Road Accident Investigation Group.

Selfoss police is responsible for further investigation of the accident and are requesting help from possible witnesses.
