Man Dies While Diving in Iceland

A man in his forties died while hobby diving between Hvammsvík inlet and Hvítanes cape in Hvalfjördur fjord—a popular location among hobby divers—yesterday afternoon. The man’s partner suddenly noticed him lying motionless on the shore.

A Coast Guard helicopter was called to the scene. The photo is unrelated to this story. By Páll Stefánsson.

He immediately called the police, who arrived with divers and emergency teams and a Coast Guard helicopter was also called to the scene. The man was announced dead and transported by helicopter to Reykjavík, Fréttabladid reports.

The two divers had become separated, so the man’s partner cannot account for what had happened. The Mossfellsbaer department of the Capital Region Police is responsible for investigating the accident.
