Man Dies in Fire after Saving Woman and Children

A man in his 40s died in a fire in an apartment complex in the Reykjavík suburb of Breidholt early yesterday morning. The father of three lost his life after saving a woman and her two children from their burning apartment.

The mother and her children were taken to hospital due to smoke inhalation, Morgunbladid reports.

The source of the fire is unknown, and police are launching an investigation, but according to Morgunbladid, the fire may have been started by a candle. There may not have been a smoke detector inside the apartment where the fire started.

The apartment that caught fire is located on the second-highest floor of the four-storey complex. The stairwell quickly filled with smoke, so the people living on the top floor couldn’t get out of the building. They were later rescued by firefighters with a crane.

About 20 firefighters were called to the scene and they were successful in extinguishing the fire. Volunteers from the Icelandic Red Cross established facilities on a bus and a large trailer to assist the 20 inhabitants of the apartment complex.
