A man died inside the detention facilities at the police station of the Sudurnes Police Department in southwest Iceland on Monday night. He didn’t have any visible marks that could have explained his death. Preliminary autopsy results are expected in the coming days.

The man, who was born in 1978, had been put into detention with his friend because of their drunken state and they were supposed to sleep it out behind bars, Morgunbladid reports.
The Reykjavík Metropolitan Police is in charge of the investigation of the case. “It was considered appropriate in this instance that a different police department be responsible for the investigation,” said superintendent Björgvin Björgvinsson.
“We have talked with people with whom he was acquainted, and those who were with him that night, and are processing the information,” Björgvinsson stated.
If the preliminary results from the autopsy are inconclusive, the investigators will wait for the results of a toxic and chemical analysis which could take up to eight weeks.
