Man Dies at Sea off East Iceland

A man died at sea yesterday when a boat overturned after crashing against a reef by the island Skrúdur between Fáskrúdsfjördur and Reydarfjördur yesterday morning. The man’s partner managed to get into a life raft and was helped to get to the shore.

According to Gudjón Már Jónsson, divisional director of search and rescue teams in east Iceland, boats in the vicinity and around 60 search and rescue team members were called out when the accident was reported at 9 am, Fréttabladid reports.

Ten divers from as far as Höfn in the south and Húsavík in the north joined the search. The man in the life raft was found shortly afterwards. He believed his partner still to be inside the overturned boat.

The boat was later found and divers searched the area around it but found it too risky to search inside the boat itself due to difficult currents. The boat was therefore towed into calmer seas in Fáskrúdsfjördur fjord where divers found the man dead inside the boat.

The two men had been transferring the boat from Vopnafjördur to Reykjavík. This is the first fatal accident at sea off the coast of Iceland in two years.
