Man convicted for sexually abusing disabled daughter

An elderly man was sentenced at the District Court of Northeast Iceland yesterday to three years in prison yesterday for sexually abusing his severely disabled daughter on two occasions. The man must also pay his daughter ISK 800,000 (USD 13,000, EUR 9,000) in compensation.

In 1991 the man was sentenced to 15 months in prison for repeatedly abusing his same daughter sexually, on at least 13 occasions, Bladid reports.

The violations for which the man was convicted yesterday took place in January this year at the woman’s home. Her brother suspected something was wrong and his sister told him what had happened.

He took his sister to the hospital where traces of sperm where found. Her father first denied having abused his daughter, but later confessed to the crime.

The court cased raised questions as to whether the ruling had been strict enough and why the man had been granted such easy access to his daughter after having been found guilty of sexually abusing her in the past.
