The man, who is in his thirties, is an employee of a garbage disposal company. He was assigned the task of transporting the tank from Arnarstapi village in the south of Snaefellsnes peninsula to the town of Ólafsvík, on the north side, where it was supposed to be emptied into the sewage system. According to RÚV national radio, the employee couldn’t be bothered to drive to Ólafsvík and opted instead to empty the contents of the tank into a hole in a nearby lava field.
Although the man was found guilty, he only received a suspended sentence and remains on probation for the next two years.
