Five people were traveling by helicopter to the north of Dalvík in North Iceland yesterday when a large avalanche fell from the mountain north of Sauðanes shortly after 6 pm. They had disembarked the aircraft when the guide was caught by the avalanche.

His traveling companions managed to free him and fly him to the hospital in Akureyri. “They were playing in the snow and the guide was examining the area when the avalanche fell,” Dalvík police officer Sævar Ingason told Fréttablaðið. He added that the guide had not been seriously injured.
It has snowed heavily in the region in the past days. It took the Icelandic Road Administration a long time to open the road across Ólafsfjarðarmúli, between Dalvík and Ólafsfjörður. It was reopened at 9:40 pm last night.
