According to mbl.is, the case involves the largest quantity of ecstasy tablets to be seized at the Tom Jobim airport in Brazil.

Frettablaðið reports that he is suspected of having been involved in the smuggling of 46,000 ecstasy tablets. The narcotics have a reported street value of ISK 300 million (USD 2.35 million, EUR 1.9 million).
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that an Icelandic national has been arrested in Rio, Morgunblaðið reports.
According to reports, a 26-year-old female passenger was caught with the ecstasy tablets in her luggage when she arrived from Portugal on Monday. She told police that she was on her way to meet her boyfriend and the Icelandic man at a cafe in the Ipanema area of Rio. The police later arrested the two men.
The man reportedly has a long criminal record and according to mbl.is received a seven-and-a-half-year sentence related to an extensive drug case in 2001.
