The man appears to have attacked his wife in their home and held her by the throat until she lost consciousness.
The police wouldn’t release any information on the events leading up to the assault but confirmed to visir.is that the man had called for assistance himself.
The Reykjavík Metropolitan Police submitted a demand that the man be sentenced to custody until May 30 on the basis of the sentence being in the interest of the investigation, which was agreed to by the judge.
According to the newspaper’s sources, the suspect has a criminal history. He was sentenced to two years in prison for drug smuggling in the mid-1980s, in a case which raised considerable attention at the time.
