Criminals collecting debt attacked a man in his early thirties in his home in Hafnarfjördur outside Reykjavík last weekend, dragged him out of his house and took him to Heidmörk, a popular outdoor recreational area, beat him and then left him there.
The man managed to walk to the Reykjavík suburb of Gardabaer where he broke a window in a Bónus grocery store to trigger the alarm in the hope that someone would find him, Fréttabladid reports.
The man was found bleeding and with bruises on his face outside the Bónus store and was taken to the emergency room.
One individual has been arrested, suspected of having participated in the attack, but was released on Sunday after questioning. Police would not confirm whether that person had confessed to the crime.
Head of the Capital Region Police investigative department, Fridrik Smári Björgvinsson, told Fréttabladid that he expects those responsible for the attack will be arrested soon because police know their identities.
