Majority of Poll Participants Want Early Elections

By Iceland Review

According to an opinion poll by Fréttabladid newspaper, almost 64 percent of participants want new general elections to be held next spring or sooner. Under normal circumstances, the next elections would be held in 2011.

Less than six percent of participants want elections already before the end of this year, while 19 percent would like to vote at the beginning of 2009. The largest group in the poll, representing 38.6 percent, would like to see new general elections in spring 2009, Fréttabladid reports.

Roughly seven percent of participants want early elections but still later than spring 2009 while 29.3 percent are not prepared to vote for a new government until the current term ends in 2011.

Fréttabladid called 800 people at random on November 22 and 90.8 percent were willing to answer the newspaper’s question on when they believed the next general elections should be held.
