Majority of Icelanders Happy with Sochi Attendance

By Iceland Review

The majority of Icelanders believe that President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson and Minister for Culture Illugi Gunnarsson did the right thing by attending the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Fifty-five percent of respondents believed it was right for Ólafur Ragnar to attend and 54 percent for Illugi, according to a new poll by MMR.

Their visit to Sochi had been criticized by some due to Russia’s position on the gay community.

Among supporters of the Prime Minister’s Progressive Party, 82 percent were in favor of the president’s visit and 76 percent of the minister’s decision to attend. Sixty-seven percent of supporters of the other ruling coalition party, the Independence Party, were happy that the visit went ahead whereas 73 percent of supporters of the opposition believed it was wrong for Ólafur Ragnar and 76.5 percent for Illugi to attend.
