Majority Coalition in Kópavogur Collapses

Hjálmar Hjálmarsson, who represents the Second-Best Party (Næstbesti flokkurinn) in the town council of Kópavogur, decided yesterday to terminate the party’s collaboration with the Social Democrats in the council’s majority coalition.

The decision was made because of disagreement regarding plans to make Mayor of Kópavogur Guðrún Pálsdóttir redundant, Fréttablaðið reports.

“We were first and foremost discontent about the work methods in this matter although we didn’t disagree with the plans as such. Guðrún Pálsdóttir’s professional honor was attacked and we didn’t want to take responsibility for such conduct,” Hjálmar reasoned.

Guðríður Arnardóttir, who leads the Social Democrats in Kópavogur, said Hjámar’s move had come as a surprise and that the collaboration with the Second-Best party had been successful so far.

No formal talks on a new coalition have begun, Guðríður stated when asked by Fréttablaðið’s journalist yesterday.
