Nobody was injured when an articulated lorry completely burnt out on Oddskarði mountain road, between Norðurfjörður and Eskifjörður in the East Fjords, late last evening.
The vehicle was carrying fish from Neskaupstaður when it caught alight on the way back down the steep slope, RÚV reports.
Guðmundur Helgi Sigfússon, chief of the local fire brigade, says that the lorry driver had tried to extinguish the fire without success. “There’s already a big fire when we arrive at the scene,” He says. “The trailer was largely burnt and the cab was also on fire. As a result, the vehicle is a write-off.”
The fire brigade had to bring three fire engines to the scene, due to the amount of water required to bring the blaze under control.
It is not yet known what caused the truck to ignite.
