The 20th European Team Chess Championship opens tomorrow in Laugardalshöll, Reykjavík, and continues through November 22, according to skak.is. Among the participants is World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen from Norway and Women’s World Chess Champion Mariya Muzychuk from Ukraine.
This is the most significant chess event in Iceland since the world championship in 1972, between Bobby Fisher and Boris Spassky. Teams from 35 countries compete, and almost 500 of the participants come from abroad.
Among the best known contestants are Anish Giri, Levon Aronian, Alexander Grischuk, Vassily Ivanchuk, Peter Svidler, Alexei Shirov, Nigel Short, Ivan Sokolov and Luke McShane.
Iceland has two teams in the open section at the Championship, one of which is the Iceland Legends: Friðrik Ólafsson, Iceland’s first grand master, Helgi Ólafsson, Jóhann Hjartarson, Jón L. Árnason and Margeir Pétursson.
The other team has the following members: Hannes Hlífar Stefánsson, Héðinn Steingrímsson, Hjörvar Steinn Grétarsson, Henrik Danielsen og Guðmundur Kjartansson.
The members of the Icelandic women’s team are the following: Lenka Ptacnikova, Guðlaug Þorsteinsdóttir, Elsa María Kristínardóttir, Hrund Hauksdóttir og Veronika Steinunn Magnúsdóttir.
