The move marks a significant escalation in the so-called ‘mackerel wars,’ as it will be the first time the EU uses trade sanctions against the two countries to force them to give up their unilateral mackerel quotas.

Iceland and the Faroe Islands argue that the rise in sea temperature has caused the mackerel to migrate further north to Icelandic and Faroese waters.
