Lufthansa to Fly Year-Round to Iceland

German airline Lufthansa has announced that it will add Iceland as a year-round destination, according to Viðskiptablaðið. Lufthansa has been operating scheduled flights from Frankfurt to Keflavík International Airport during the summer since 2015, but now adds three flights a week between the destinations in winter too.

High demand is behind the decision, according to an announcement from the airline. It goes on to say that the flights are available for booking effective immediately.

Isavia, which runs Iceland’s airports, has been aiming to increase the number of airlines flying to Iceland throughout the year, in accordance with the goal of the tourism industry to reduce seasonal fluctuations in tourism.

A new release from Isavia states that it is particularly pleasing that Lufthansa is added to the group of airlines that fly to Iceland year-round because German tourist numbers in the winter have not increased as much as those from other nations, and this move by Lufthansa presents a great opportunity to promote Iceland as a winter destination to Germans.

In addition, Frankfurt Airport is a major airline hub and Lufthansa’s addition as a year-round carrier to Iceland will also improve connections from Iceland to a number of destinations in both Europe and Asia via Frankfurt, according to the Isavia release.
