Louisiana for Iceland

An eighteenth century document preserved at the French Ministry of Defence in Paris reveals that the French Government wanted to claim Iceland. They were prepared to give Louisiana in the USA to Denmark in exchange for Iceland.

Historian Anna Agnarsdóttir has been studying the document and her revelations appeared in Morgunbladid this morning. The interest of the French reached a climax between 1760 and 1770 as they wanted to build a naval base in Iceland to counter the British.
