Lost Scientist Found in Highlands

Judicael Bruno Arnold Decriem, a French scientist from the University of Iceland Science Institute reported missing on Saturday, was discovered by emergency teams near Landmannalaugar in the southern highlands on Saturday night.

Decriem, who had been collecting GPS transmitters, had gotten his Toyota Hilux stuck on Thursday and had been waiting for rescue in his car. Neither his radio telephone nor his NMT telephone worked so he was unable to call for help, Morgunbladid reports.

The scientist was cold and hungry, but otherwise unharmed. “It is definitely a little scary being alone in the wilderness in a blizzard,” Decriem said.

Emergency services do not recommend that people travel alone in the highlands in winter without knowing the area.
