The Icelandic Coast Guard helicopter is in Ísafjörður, the West Fjords, getting ready for a flight intended to look for polar bears, mbl.is reports.
A dissection of the polar bear which was killed in Northwest Iceland Saturday night revealed that the animal was a lactating female, which only recently might have been in the company of its cubs.
An armed person is onboard the helicopter. Hlynur Hafberg Snorrason, chief superintendent in Ísafjörður, describes the mission as routine surveillance of the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve.
“There are many corners to look into. We took a trip like this the other day, we’ll take another one now, which will be followed by more than one,” Hlynur stated. He confirmed that two police officers are onboard, along with a staff member from the Directorate of Fisheries.”
Hlynur stressed there have been no reports of a polar bear sighting in Hornstrandir.
