Icelandic startup company Locatify issued a new smart phone app for the Apple Store on Friday, guided tours for the historical city Trier in Germany in collaboration with the German publishing company AudioBits.
There are two guided tours on offer, one short which can be downloaded for free, and another longer and more detailed tour which gives a clear picture of the Roman Era and Middle Ages in Trier, a press release describes.
Actors in the role of a wine merchant and nun from the Middle Ages guide travelers to archeological remains, ancient castles and churches and recite notable events in the lives of people of centuries past.
The tour begins at Porta Nigra, an ancient building which is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the stories are told in German, French and English.
The collaboration with AudioBits was established through Enterprise Europe Network, a communication network to which Innovation Center Iceland has access. It is designed to assist companies and institutions to compete in the international market.
The Trier tours are Locatify’s first international tours for smart phones and iPads and others are in the pipelines. Six tours in eight languages are already available for Iceland.
The company is also developing an orienteering game system based on the technology of smart phone guides where teams compete in finding treasures and solving riddles.
The first game, made in cooperation with teachers and students of the secondary school Menntaskólinn í Borgarfirdi, recently took place in Borgarnes, west Iceland.
Foreign visiting students in two teams made human pyramids and answered questions such as how high Mt. Hafnarfjall is, while following a map revealing their location.
The game was successful and the students had a lot of fun.
