Lively Salmon Fishing – Citizen of the Year with First Salmon

The summer of 2012 was one of the worst salmon seasons in memory and hopes were not high for this summer. However, from many rivers anglers are reporting great opening days. For example in Haffjardará in Snæfellsnes 30 salmon were caught in the first two days, most of them big.

From Kjarrá in Borgarfjördur the report is likewise good, 54 salmon in three days. Kjarrá/Thverá is one of the best salmon rivers in Iceland, but last year there was insufficient water and the salmon were few.

The first salmon came from Ellidaár in Reykjavík this morning at 7:05, landed by the citizen of the year, Ólafur Ólafsson, chairman of Ösp, sportsclub for the mentally discharged. Ólafur’s selection as citizen of the year was announced two minutes before he caught the fish.

The price for salmon fishing has gone up in Iceland and many permits have not been sold due to that and the bad season last year. The good news now could change that.
