Danish-Icelandic artist’s Ólafur Elíasson’s project Little Sun has exceeded expectations in crowdfunding, according to a press release. The project—a small solar-powered LED lamp meant for the 1.1 billion people worldwide who don’t have access to electricity—was designed by Ólafur in collaboration with Danish engineer Frederik Ottesen.
The EUR 50,000 (USD 56,000) crowdfunding drive on Kickstarter has reached 300 percent of its goal in five days. It reached second most mentions on Twitter September 3 and worldwide support.
In addition to supporting Little Sun’s partner in Zimbabwe, backers are now able to supply Little Sun Chargers to BETA Sarl in Burkina Faso with an additional EUR 40 (USD 45) pledge.
“The more support our campaign receives, the closer we edge towards making a difference to the 1.1 billion around the world without access to the electrical grid,” says Managing Director Felix Hallwachs. Should the campaign reach EUR 250,000 (USD 280,000), there are plans to produce a desk stand, transforming the Little Sun Charge into a desk lamp.
