The festival kicked off at 10:30 am today when all of the Southwest Iceland municipality’s 2,000 students released balloons, as stated on the festival’s website.

The program includes a number of events, including art exhibitions, concerts, whale watching and other tours, concluding with a fireworks show on Saturday evening.

In Reykjavík, 17 authors from 16 countries and ten Icelandic authors will participate in the Literary Festival’s panels, readings and discussions. The program also includes readings in a swimming pool and the grand final: the Literary Ball.

This year, the festival coincides with the PEN International conference. Founded in 1985, the Reykjavík International Literary Festival has attracted authors such as Kurt Vonnegut, Haruki Murakami and Herta Müller.
