Lightning strikes Iceland Express airplane

Lightning hit the wing of an Iceland Express passenger airplane during landing at Keflavík airport on Saturday. According to the airline’s CEO Matthías Imsland, there had not been any danger and the passengers were not frightened.

“For people who are not involved in the aviation industry this may not sound too good, but the truth is that this happens regularly,” Imsland told Morgunbladid.

Thunderstorms are very rare in Iceland and therefore not many incidents like these occur at Keflavík airport, but they are more common in other countries.

“These airplanes have perfect lightning protection and are designed to withstand lightning strikes,” Imsland said. According to regulations, all airplanes that are hit by lightning have to be examined, so the airplane was taken to a hangar after the incident.

There were some delays to Iceland Express’ schedule last weekend following the lightning strike, but, according to Imsland, all flights are now operating on time.
