The level of uncertainty which was declared at Sólheimajökull glacier in South Iceland on August 3 was lifted yesterday, visir.is reports.
The glacier’s edge had risen 1.5 meters (4 feet, 11 inches) over a period of several days in early August and it was considered possible that a large piece of the glacier’s edge would break off causing a tidal wave in the underlying lagoon. Rumbling had also been heard from the glacier.
As a precautionary measure, the car park at Sólheimajökull was closed and people were urged to keep away from the glacier’s immediate vicinity.
The Iceland Met Office said in a statement that their experts have studied the circumstances and suggested that actions are taken to minimize the risk of accidents occurring around the glacier.
