Lennon Ono Grant for Peace Presented

The Lennon Ono Grant for Peace was presented by Yoko Ono at Harpa Concert Hall, Reykjavík, yesterday, October 9, on John Lennon’s birthday, according to imaginepeace.com. This was the sixth time the awards were presented in Iceland, but they were first presented in New York in 2002.

Four pacifists received the prize this year. They are Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei, British/Indian artist Anish Kapoor, Hungarian poet, actor and performance artist Katalin Ladik, and Icelandic artist Ólafur Elíasson. All four have chosen a charity to receive their grants.

Ólafur Elíasson nominated Maternity Foundation, a Danish development organization, which fights to save the lives of mothers and babies in childbirth.

Anish Kapoor chose Helen Bamber Foundation, which supports refugees and asylum seekers.

Katalin Ladik nominated Hungarian Interchurch Aid, one of Hungary’s largest charity organizations.

Ai Weiwei chose Kayany Foundation, which supports the education needs of school-aged Syrian refugee children in Lebanon.
