Left-Greens Gain Support in Poll

According to a new poll conducted by Fréttablaðið, Stöð2 and Vísir, the Left-Green Movement has gained more support than any other Icelandic political party since the last poll. The poll was conducted October 17 and 18. The Social Democratic Alliance appears to be losing support.

The poll’s results indicate that the Independence Party enjoys the most support of all, or 23.7 percent, followed by the Pirate Party with 20.7 percent. The Left-Green Movement receives 19.2 percent support, compared with 15.1 in Fréttablaðið’s last poll.

The Progressive Party gets 8.5 percent support in the poll, Bright Future 7.4 percent, the Reform Party 6.6 percent and the Social Democratic Alliance 6.5 percent. The People’s Party receives 3.4 percent support.

Five percent voter support is needed to be represented in Alþingi, the Icelandic parliament. Parliamentary elections are scheduled October 29.The poll was conducted by contacting 1,303 people by phone October 17 and 18. Of those contacted, 801 responded, bringing the response rate to 61.5 percent.

Of those who responded, 68 percent expressed their opinion, 15.7 were undecided, 5.7 percent either planned not to vote or to turn in a blank ballot, but 10.6 percent refused to say whom they planned to vote for.
