Left-Green party membership has increased to over six thousand members, RÚV reports. This increase has taken place in the lead-up to Reykjavik City Council primaries, which will be held on February 24.
Party membership had been increasing at the beginning of the year, although the Left-Green’s numbers had been growing only slowly. News of the forthcoming primaries seemed, however, to spur membership growth.
Roughly 30 people canceled their party membership with the Left-Greens in November, in protest of the party’s leadership negotiations with the Independence and Progressive Parties. At that time, there were about 5,800 people registered as Left-Greens.
The Reykjavík City Council primaries will be held on February 24, and will be primarily electronic, although it is also possible to vote in the Left-Green’s office at Túngata 14 on election day.
