Left-Green MP Wants Referendum on NATO Membership

The Campaign Against Military Bases (CAMB) has released a resolution demanding that Iceland withdraw its membership to NATO.

Left-Green MP Ögmundur Jónasson told Fréttabladid that it is important for the Icelandic nation to vote on the NATO membership in a referendum as it is a military union and the nation has never been given the chance to vote on it.

The resolution was sent in response to confidential documents from the NATO military forces stationed in Afghanistan which were recently made public by Wikileaks.

CAMB also demands that NATO’s military forces evacuate Afghanistan and make amends for the damage caused to the country.

“It is important that Icelanders immediately withdraw all support to the war and apologize for their part in it,” the resolution reads.

“If you take a close look, NATO is just as much a dodgy operation today as it used to be. Now an attack on a member state is not only a motive to take military action, but threats directed towards member states are motives as well,” Jónasson claimed.

“It is difficult to define that threat and it is mostly directed towards those who practice unjust politics. Iceland has therefore, with its membership, agreed to preventive measures to avert threats against members,” the MP concluded.
