Left-Green Leader on Her Way to Bessastaðir

Left-Green Movement Leader Katrín Jakobsdóttir is on her way to Bessastaðir, the Icelandic presidential residence, where she is to meet with President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson at 10 am, Vísir reports. For more than a week, she has had the mandate to form a government, following the October 29 parliamentary election. Wednesday afternoon, it became clear that her attempt to form a coalition between her party, the Pirate Party, the Reform Party, Bright Future and the Social Democratic Alliance had failed.

It is thought that the purpose of her visit to Bessastaðir is to return the mandate to form a government. She met with members of her party group at Alþingishúsið, the parliamentary building, at 9 am this morning.

The president has issued a statement, announcing a press conference at 11 am, following his meeting with Katrín.

Before Katrín received the mandate to form a government, Independence Party Leader Bjarni Benediktsson had in vain attempted to form a government with the Reform Party and Bright Future.
