Left–Green Leader not Running for President

By Iceland Review

Katrín Jakobsdóttir, head of the Left-Green Movement, announced on her Facebook page this morning that she will not be running for the position of president of Iceland in June.

Her post states, “I will not be running for president this time. I hope the campaign of the individuals who run for this office will address the issues and be meaningful, and that the person chosen for this position will serve the nation well, fighting for human rights, increased democracy, the protection of the environment and of the Icelandic language.”

Polls had indicated that among those whose names had been mentioned as possible candidates for the presidency, she enjoyed the strongest support.

Two candidates have launched their presidential campaigns since Friday. Those are Heimir Örn Hólmarsson, electric technology engineer and MPM, and Vigfús Bjarni Albertsson, hospital minister.
