Left-Green Leader Invited to President

Left-Green Movement Leader Katrín Jakobsdóttir has been invited to Bessastaðir, the Icelandic president’s residence, today at 1 pm. It is presumed that at the meeting, President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson will give her the mandate to form a government, RÚV reports.

Independence Party Leader Bjarni Benediktsson was given that mandate following the October 29 parliamentary election, but his efforts to form a government with the Reform Party and Bright Future proved unsuccessful yesterday. This would be the first time since 1987 that a second party leader is given the mandate to form a government following an election.

Katrín told RÚV yesterday that she still had the will to form a government, as she expressed right after the election. She stated she would probably begin by talking to all parties, but that her first choice would be to form a center-left government. Still, the situation, she admitted, was complicated.

In order to form a majority center-left government, a five party coalition is needed.
