Leaders of the Social Democratic Alliance, Reform Party, and People’s Party will continue their negotiations to form a coalition government today at an undisclosed location. If successful, the parties would hold a 36-seat parliamentary majority.
Interviews to be given later in the day
The leaders of the Social Democratic Alliance, the Reform Party, and the People’s Party are continuing negotiations to form a new government today. The meeting’s location remains undisclosed.
“Yes, yes. The meetings are intense,” Ólafur Kjaran Árnason, assistant to Kristrún Frostadóttir, Chairperson of the Samfylking, told Vísir at 9.30 AM this morning. Ólafur confirmed that the location of today’s meeting would not be revealed.
Yesterday, Kristrún, who received the mandate to form a government from President Halla Tómasdóttir, met with Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, Chairperson of Viðreisn, and Inga Sæland, Chairperson of the People’s Party, in Smiðjan, a new office building for parliament.
Later today, following the discussions, the leaders will provide interviews to the media.
“Afterward, there will be parliamentary group meetings for the Social Democratic Alliance and the Reform Party. The People’s Party is likely to meet tomorrow,” Ólafur added, noting that the progress of negotiations is expected to dominate the agenda in all these meetings.
Uncertainty surrounding visitors
Yesterday, the party leaders hosted seven representatives from the Ministry of Finance. Ólafur, however, could not confirm whether any guests would attend today’s meetings. He also stated that he had little else to disclose about the day’s schedule.
As noted by Vísir, the Social Democratic Alliance secured 20.8% of the vote, earning 15 parliamentary seats, in the elections on November 30. The Reform Party garnered 15.8% and 11 seats, while the People’s Party received 13.8% and 10 seats. If these three parties succeed in forming a government, the coalition would hold a 36-member parliamentary majority.
