Lava Relieves Little Pressure, Sub-Glacial Eruption Possible

Even though a substantial eruption is ongoing at Holuhraun, it changes little in the big picture as there is still an extensive volume of magma in the Bárðarbunga caldera and the intrusive dike that has formed underground, geophysicist Páll Einarsson said in an interview with mbl.is this afternoon.

Páll said we should remember the Krafla eruptions in 1975-1984, during which 20 magma fissures were formed and nine separate eruptions took place.

According to a listing of possible scenarios, released by the Scientific Advisory Board yesterday, a sub-glacial eruption is still considered possible.

A sub-glacial eruption could cause an outburst flood and possibly explosive, ash-producing activity, in addition to flooding, most likely in Jökulsá á Fjöllum.
