It must be unique, a record, that last New Years’ Eve, 82 percent of Icelanders watched the National yearly comedy show, Áramótaskaupið, of RÚV, the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service. Fréttatíminn reports this today. This is close to ten percent more than watched last years show.
A scene from the 2011 Áramótaskaupið.
For the whole nation to come together and conclude the year by watching Áramótaskaupið has been a tradition since 1966, the year RÚV started its television broadcasting. It was the brainchild of one of its first employees, producer/director Andrés Indriðason, who directed the first one.
This year, Áramótaskaupið was directed by Gunnar Björn Guðmundsson, for the second year in a row. It has received great reviews.
