Iceland played their worst in a a Euro 2008 qualifier against Latvia on Saturday. They got a lot of good chances to score, but blew them all, and were badly beaten by Latvia instead.
Fréttabladid reports that the football match started with a blast as the star of the Icelandic team, Eidur Gudjohnsen, broke through the Latvian defense after only 80 seconds. But, unfortunately, he missed the goal. Seconds later, Maris Verpakovskis of the Latvian team made an attempt at scoring, but his shot was blocked by the Icelandic goalkeeper.
Latvia took Iceland by surprise when Girt Karlsons scored the first goal for his team after 17 minutes of game time. The Latvian supporters were overjoyed as their team had not scored a single goal in their past four matches.
The game was lively all the way through and both teams attacked aggressively. But luck was on Latvia’s side as their team kept scoring while the Icelandic team kept blowing their chances.
Aleksejs Visnakovs scored the last goal for Latvia in the beginning of the second half of the game. Fréttabladid writes that the game was a big disappointment for the Icelandic team and that they have to rebuild their confidence before Wednesday, when Iceland meets Sweden.
