Last MP from 1944 Passes Away

sigurdurbjarnason_althingiThe last living parliamentarian who served at Alþingi when the Icelandic Republic was founded in 1944, Sigurður Bjarnason from Vigur, the West Fjords, passed away this week at the age of 96.

Sigurður was elected to parliament as a representative of the Independence Party in the North Ísafjörður county in 1942 when he was 26 and remained a parliamentarian until 1970, reports.

From 1970 to 1985, Sigurður served as ambassador to Iceland in Denmark and England, among other countries.

Sigurður worked as the political editor and later editor in chief at Morgunblaðið newspaper from 1947 to 1970 and also had a seat on the town council of Ísafjörður for a period of time.
