Icelandic Maritime Administration has given Iceland’s last lighthouse keeper notice, visir.is reports.
The keeper in question is Sigurdur Pálsson at Baugsstadir. He has kept the lighthouse, which lies east of the village of Stokkseyri, for decades, having inherited the position from his father.
Pálsson explained to a local newspaper that new technology in ships and lighthouses has made lighthouse keepers redundant, except for receiving tourists. Up to a thousand people visit Baugsstadaviti lighthouse every year. From now on, they won’t be allowed entrance.
